Изящные зарисовки из быта разных сословий древней Японии от нежной расплывчатой акварели, до резких черно-белых линий угольного карандаша, легкие и прозрачные, словно набросок цветной тушью, складываются в философский трактат пронзительной силы. Все второстепенное вычеркнуто, даже имена родителей почти не упоминаются: Мияцуко — «Такэтори но Окина» («Старик, собиратель бамбука»), его жена просто «Она» — «Старуха». Рожденная на Земле вопреки всем правилам лунная принцесса однажды должна будет вернуться на родину, оставить и забыть все, что полюбила. Радости простой жизни в деревне ее детства противопоставлены вычурному этикету земной знати и божественному хладнокровию небесного народа. Кагуя не хочет ни того, ни другого, но изменить судьбу, одновременно такую заманчивую и трагичную, не в ее власти. Интересно, как создатели фильма объединили абстрактные идеи из разных сфер. Ведь в каком-то смысле «высокая культура» сродни идеям божественного, идеального, она так же является попыткой человека отодвинуться от простого, животного, навязать себе и окружающим «красивые» устои и принципы — более красивые, чем природные — превосходные, сверхъестественные. Голое тело покрывается многослойной одеждой, красота лица перекраивается и разукрашивается заново (белила, пудра, черненые зубы, выщипанные брови). «Благородная принцесса не хохочет с открытым ртом», «благородная принцесса не носится по дому», не потеет, не плачет, не смеется… Все это продукт культуры, желанной и вместе с тем обкрадывающей. И Кагуя, за которой явится свита с лотосом в руках, и Тот, кому прислуживают небесные девы, знает цену идеальному — оно у нее уже было. «Чистоте и невинности лунной столицы» она предпочитает боль и радость несовершенного мира, единственного места, где можно научиться жить и чувствовать по-настоящему. Этот взгляд с другой стороны, странный, спорный, почти вызывающий, будет учить детей любить горькую красоту жизни, а взрослым предложит задуматься. Человек, твердо стоящий на ногах, вместо воздушных замков, цена и ценность обыденной жизни, зависть богов. Конечно, люди не свободны от условностей созданного ими мира и больше не могут расти, как полевой цветок — это уже совсем другая история. Чтобы ощутить прелесть жизни на лоне природы, необходимо было сначала слезть с деревьев и выйти из пещер. Слагать стихи о первом снеге удобней в тепле жилища, чем на пронизывающем ветру, и человек все еще стремится в райские кущи, от которых так легко готовы отказаться волшебные принцессы. Но ведь сказка и не должна давать ответы на все вопросы сразу. В ней много намеков и недосказанности, которые легко упустить, — так ловко они вплетаются в сюжет между шумными, центральными событиями. As a movie watcher, I might be the most unbiased and least qualified to review The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. I know nothing of Studio Ghibli nor do I know anything about the film's writer and director Isao Takahata. Apparently both are juggernauts of animation and prolific artists in the medium of film. Without any knowledge of either I must solely look at the film for how it resonates with me, and in short: it is a beauty.
A bamboo farmer is harvesting his stalks when he comes across a tiny girl inside a lotus blossom within a severed bamboo stalk. He takes the little girl to his wife, who is childless, and they decide to care for the girl. Before they know it, the girl has transformed into a baby and rapidly grows into a striking young lady. Her father decides it must be the bamboo girl's fate to be a princess, which she fervently resists while simultaneously respecting his wishes. The poised and mysterious princess attracts much attention and enchants all those who hear of her. In the end, only she knows of her ultimate fate and in facing it, she faces her true being.
Unfortunately I found it extremely difficult to find the subtitled original Japanese language version of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and could only watch the English dubbed version, though let it be known I always much prefer to watch a film in its original language. Luckily, production was able to get veteran actors for the English voiced version of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya so the film is able to stand on its own in English as well as Japanese.
Though aspects of the narrative within The Tale of the Princess of Kaguya are conventional, since its plot derives from an old Japanese folktale, the story is fantastical, emotional and enchanting and the antithesis of stale. The themes presented in the story are imaginative and engaging and the animation is complementary to the style.
I had long forgotten the days when animation was a medium to facilitate imagination, creativity and artistry – and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya revitalizes the medium for American viewers in a wonderful and masterful way.

Kaguya hime no monogatari theme song. I watched this movie twice. The first time was November last year, I loved everything about it, the story, the animation, the background art, literally everything. It changed something in me, but I wasn't quite sure what it was. Then I watched it for the second time last month, and now I think I get it. This movie made all my fears regarding motherhood disappear. I didn't relate to Yuki, the daughter, when I watched it (even though I had amazing parents and a wonderful childhood) but to Hana. I wanted to be that strong, I wanted to devote myself entirely to something so pure and full of love, I wanted to be that kind and hard working, I wanted to work on myself so I could have those virtues (or arete, as her college professor said in the beginning of the movie, when she spots Ookami in the classroom. I used to have some issues regarding growing up, letting go of my past, my childhood, my family, but this movie changed everything. I don't feel anxious or scared when I think that someday (hopefully) I'm gonna become a mother. Now I actually look forward to it, once, of course, like her, I meet the right man.

The expectations were sort of mixed since it was the first film after Hayao Miyazaki's retirement, and nobody could really tell what Studio Ghibli can come up with now.
But when you actually start watching The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, all these politics and worries immediately dissipate. This film is SO visually different from what Hayao Miyazaki made, yet there's the same delicate touch and emotionality flowing from every second of it. It is like the paintings came to life to tell us a story. The story beautiful as life itself. In a way, it can be viewed as a parable about life, nature and humanity's futile attempts to ensnare it for its own vain entertainment.
But, honestly, no analysis does The Tale of The Princess Kaguya any good. Some things are better if left as they are, for us to simply contemplate their beauty without trying to touch it or make it our own. And this is exactly the reason why it's pointless to dissect this movie into details and describe them here. Simply watch it, and you will be spiritually rewarded.
